Named after the lovely French village of Saint-Chinian, the appellation goes from the coastal plains of the Mediterranean Sea to the foothills of the Massive Central Mountain. The beautiful hilly landscape pleased the Romans as early as over two millennia ago; the ruins of 21 villas in the area still exist. They also found ideal conditions for viticulture. The northern soils are composed of schist which provide concentrated wines while the clayey and chalky southern Terroirs offer less robust and more easy drinking wines.
