Monte Real Gran Reserva Rioja 1998

This Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998 Limited Edition is the first wine of the brand Monte Real which is made from 100% Tempranillo grapes. It has very good vintage qualification, although by the specific climatic conditions of the El Monte vineyard, from where the grapes come from, it could have been considered excellent. The vineyard is situated in Cenicero, El Monte, at 430 meters altitude. It has calcareous clay soil, with abundant pebbles and vines that are over 40 years old. This soil composition naturally regulates production of between 3,000 and 4,000 kilos/hectare. The growing cycle was developed in excellent weather conditions. The harvest, which began in October 1988, saw a year of moderate productions. Cool temperatures at night and warm temperatures during the day, ensured the grapes arrived at the winery in perfect health.

The high quality of the grapes enabled long maceration times, sometimes for 30 days. The wine was then aged in American oak barrels, whose wood had been outdoors for at least four years, which helped reduce aggressive tannins, ensuring the optimal long-aging planned for this wine. It was then racked into barrels in February 1999, once it had completed the slow and complex process of malolactic fermentation. Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998 Limited Edition remained in these barrels for 40 months, with racking every six months, to prevent the wine from acquiring unwanted aromas. During its long aging process, no physical or chemical stabilization was necessary and the wine proceeded to bottling in 2003.

Tasting notes
This limited-edition rioja is an intense ruby-red in colour, with dark orange-brown hues, thanks to its excellent ageing process, with a good layer, and is clean and bright.
