In the early 20th century, Châteauneuf-du-Pape was plagued by wine fraud; various rules for the production of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, drawn up and promulgated in 1923, were the first Appellation Contrôlée rules in France, and provided the prototype for subsequent AOC rules. The experts who at this time wanted to put Le Clos du Caillou area into the Chateauneuf delimitation area arrived at the Domain and were welcomed with a gun! so they left quickly, and made the decision then, to not put Le Clos du Caillou in the area of Châteauneuf du Pape. That is why, Le Clos du Caillou produce Côtes du Rhône inside the area of Chateauneuf du Pape!
Year after year this estate continues to produce some of the finest Chateauneuf du Papes and Cotes du Rhones. In 2002 Jean-Denis Vacheron who ran the Domaine with his wife Sylvie passed away, but Sylvie has continued with the Estate and has taken the Domain to new hights, a fitting legacy for her late husband.
